Engineered wood flooring consists of a real hardwood veneer, typically 3–6mm thick, bonded to a multi-layered plywood or HDF core. This construction makes engineered boards 70–80% more dimensionally stable than solid wood, reducing the risk of warping, cupping, or gapping caused by changes in temperature and humidity. Engineered wood is suitable for installation over underfloor heating systems and in rooms with higher moisture levels, such as kitchens and conservatories, where solid wood would be unreliable. Standard boards range from 14mm to 21mm total thickness, with wider planks of 180–220mm being the most popular choice in UK homes. Depending on the veneer thickness, engineered wood floors can be sanded and refinished 2–5 times, giving a typical lifespan of 25–50 years. At Flooring Supplies Centre we stock engineered wood flooring from brands including Kahrs, Boen, and Quick-Step.
Wood flooring prices in the UK vary by type, species, and finish. Laminate flooring starts from around £10 per square metre for entry-level ranges and rises to £40/sqm for premium Quick-Step and Balterio collections. Engineered wood flooring typically costs between £25 and £120 per square metre, depending on the wood species, plank width, and brand. Solid wood flooring ranges from £30 to £150/sqm. For a standard UK living room of 20 square metres, material costs alone would be £200–£800 for laminate, £500–£2,400 for engineered wood, or £600–£3,000 for solid wood. Professional installation typically adds £15–£30 per square metre. Flooring Supplies Centre offers free UK delivery on orders over £500 and trade account pricing for professional installers.
Engineered wood, laminate, and LVT/SPC flooring are all compatible with underfloor heating systems, while solid wood is generally not recommended due to its tendency to expand and contract with temperature changes. Engineered wood performs best when the surface temperature stays below 27°C, and thinner boards (14–15mm) conduct heat more efficiently than thicker options. LVT and SPC flooring offer excellent heat conductivity and are fully waterproof, making them ideal for bathrooms and kitchens with underfloor heating. Laminate flooring is also compatible, provided you use an underlay designed for underfloor heating with a low thermal resistance (tog value below 1.0). Always check the manufacturer's specific guidance before installation — most brands stocked at Flooring Supplies Centre, including Kahrs, Boen, and Quick-Step, provide detailed underfloor heating specifications for each product range.
